Prattville – The Birmingham News reported that the dismantling of Bruno’s Supermarkets LLC is expected to begin this week as a bankruptcy court auction kicks off the final chapter of the former family business. Bruno’s operates under the names of Bruno’s and Food World in Alabama and Florida.

Bruno’s announced plans to enter into Chapter 11 bankruptcy organization proceedings on February 5, 2009. An auction will be held on Wednesday, April 29, barring a last-minute appearance from someone interested in buying the grocery chain.

The company began as a small market opened by Joseph Bruno in Birmingham, Alabama, during the Great Depression, and grew steadily until 1972 when Bruno’s opened its discount grocery chain, Food World, which was followed by warehouse-oriented Consumer Foods.

A Prattville Food World manager told Our Prattville that they have not yet had any instructions regarding closing the store and that he understands that nothing official will come down until the buyer deadline date of April 29.

    Bruno's is officially kaput.

A shame. When I lived in Birmingham, the Bruno's at the Summit was the best around. The Bruno's at Perry Hill Road looked more like a Food World, and now even that is going.
