Prattville – Mayor Jim Byard Jr. announced Tuesday night at the City Council meeting that January 17-23 is Good Character Week in the city and presented the proclamation to Mary Beth Pritchard of the Character Coalition.

During the week, organizations and citizens of the Prattville-Autauga area who show and embrace good character traits will be commended and recognized.

The celebration began on Monday with character night for families at the Mellow Mushroom in Prattville.

“They sold our character cards that each one of you have,” Byard told the Council members. “And if you had your card last night you got 15% off of your purchase at the restaurant.”

Byard then introduced Frank Lemar, the President of the Character Coalition, along with other members.

“I don’t know if that means they have exemplary character. I know most of them and can vouch that they do,” quipped the mayor.

“But, just because we have a Character Coalition, it doesn’t mean we have the corner market. It means that we are practicing it and we are reminded every day that character is vitally important in our lives,” he continued.

Beverly Byard recognized Ivy Johnson, a first-grade teacher at Daniel Pratt Elementary School for her good character. Johnson published a family organizer using her own system of managing her family and life.

Lemar honored the mayor and the Council as being supporters of the Coalition since its inception and presented each of them with a plaque.

The Character Coalition was formed in early 2007 and they have worked ever since that time to promote good character in our community. The group has five committees: family, faith, business, government, and education.

At each Council meeting, a character trait is announced. There are 49 traits and they are centered on a program the coalition promotes that delivers a consistent message all across the community.

The January character trait of the month is punctuality – showing esteem for others by doing the right thing at the right time.
