I have known this fine person for over 25 years and she made such an impression on me. (Saying that one is a "fine person" is the greatest compliment you can give a Southerner---better than the Congressional Medal of Honor). Although much of this article deals with her love of sports, I can assure you that she wanted each child she encountered to excel in whatever s/he desired. I was not necessarily athletic. I liked music. I wanted to play the pipe organ at church. She picked up the phone and called the organist of the largest Episcopal Church in Mobile, AL, and practically 'told' him to teach me. (As I recall the conversation it was more along the lines of, "And this is what I want you to do. And he'll be over in a few minutes and you can get it all sorted out. And I want you teach him everything you know before he graduates in a few months. ..... Well, it can be done, and I appreciate you. He is on the way over." ) I soon became--and am--an organist. She taught me how to use a computer. She encouraged me to write a book. This dear lady is --and shall be remembered as -- a saint.
