Prattville – The American Cancer Society’s signature activity, Relay for Life, kicked off Friday night at the East YMCA on McQueen Smith Road South in Prattville.
This event offers the community the chance to personally participate in the fight against cancer. Teams camp out and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Relays are an overnight event, sometimes lasting as long as twenty-four hours.
Friday night’s relay began at 6:00 p.m. and will end at 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Pamela Trammell, a co-chairman, has been involved with the Relay for Life for fourteen years. Experiencing the devastation of cancer firsthand, Mrs. Trammell said, “This is the best volunteer experience I’ve ever had.”
This year’s goal was $100,000 and by midnight they were very close to accomplishing that remarkable achievement. Over forty one teams were involved in the activity and Mrs. Trammell estimated about 1,000 people had shown up for the event.
