Prattville – Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is the largest golf course construction project ever attempted.
It was the brainstorm of Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama in the 1980s. His goal was to help the state of Alabama and to effectively diversify the assets of the state’s pension fund.
The team that he assembled to accomplish that goal enlisted legendary English-born architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. to make it happen. Designing over 500 golf courses around the world, he was indeed the best one for the job.
His first big assignment was designing the Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, in collaboration with golf legend Bobby Jones. The two men were not related, but shortly after that Robert began using the middle name “Trent” to avoid any confusion.
There are now ten different sites in Alabama of the Golf Trail and all partake of the natural topography, extracted from the land, not imposed on it.
One of the most unique aspects of the Trail are the tee locations. The tee markers on the Trail are pegged to ability level, not age or gender. The courses were designed to measure as short as 4,700 yards and as long as about 7,700 yards from the tournament tees.
The Legends at Capitol Hill in Prattville offers three championship golf courses; the Senator, the Legislator, and the Judge. The Senator is a traditional Scottish-style layout with over 150 pot-hole bunkers situated throughout the 18 holes, and mounds 20 to 40 feet in height. The mounds hide the cart path or any other hole from the fairway.
The Legislator is a more traditional course and plays in and out of pine trees along a bluff. The Judge plays alongside the Alabama River with 12 holes bordering the water, with elevation drops of more than 200 feet.
It has been described as simply magnificent and provides some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The green fees range from $45 to $74 and local reservations can be made up to seven days in advance.
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville is located off of Highway 82. From I-65, take exit 179 and go west a half mile to the second light. Turn left on Highway 82, and travel a quarter mile to the entrance on the left.
The Navistar LPGA Classic will be held at the RTJ Capitol Hill from September 28 until October 4, 2009.
